ALL - "God-breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16)
- All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. - 2 Tim. 3:16 Applies to both Old and New Testament.
- The phrase, given by inspiration of God, is a translation of the single Greek word theo-pneustos, meaning God-breathed. God breathed life into His Word just as he breathed life into Adam.
Old Testament
OT - written in Hebrew over 100s of years
- Written on scrolls, reading from right to left, with no vowels (discern by context).
- Parts of Daniel & Ezra are believed to have been written in Aramaic (the language of many of the surrounding peoples, including the Syrians - the language that Jesus spoke).
OT - translated in Greek
- Alexander (III) the Great, son of Philip of Macedonia in 336 BC and by 332 BC had conquered the whole of the eastern Mediterranean, including Egypt. Founded the city of Alexandria, which became center of scholarship.
- Hebrew was gradually replaced by either Aramaic or Greek.
- Around 250 BC, the OT was translated into Greek because most Jewish people spoke Greek. The translation is called the Septuagint, named for the group of Hebrew scribes in Alexandria that did the translation, possibly over an extended period of time. Assists our understanding of Ancient Hebrew. Abbreviated LXX.
